The Lion Hotel

Stayed for 2 nights and loved it . The rooms were comfortable and warm , it is an old building so rickety in places , but this added to the charm . The food was wonderful both at breakfast and dinner and the staff were very kind and accommodating.

Attended a family christening meal here after the church service. This was not the first time we had been here as my wedding reception was held here 12 years ago. I have to say that we were yet again bowled over by the 'above and beyond' attitude shown by the young people who front this business. After one of the babies in our party became fractious and unconsolable through tiredness his mother (my daughter) had to leave the meal just as mains were served. No problem for the staff, took the meal to keep it warm. After a while it was clear that my daughter was unable to rejoin the meal and I kindly requested if it was possible to 'take out' the meal. So the big shout out goes to Zak and Megan who not only made this happen but cared enough to ensure it was plated nicely with extra veg and gravy, wrapped securely and all with such amazing friendliness. Both my daughter and I send our huge thanks to you for taking the drama and upset out of a challenging event. Even before this we thought fondly of this venue but it has outstripped the service of anywhere else locally.

This review is for the staff at the bar and grill. From the moment we arrived, I felt welcomed. We were looking for a table, but sadly there wasnt one available. Juliet however, was on hand to assist. She made us feel welcome and asked us to take a seat at the bar and order a drink, and she would try her best to find us a table. She did just that and that meant more than anything. She's a real asset to this place. Excellent customer service, will definitely come again!

We stayed on NYE and really liked both the venue and the village. Unfortunately the restaurant was fully booked so we couldn’t eat dinner there which was a shame as it was one of the reasons we chose to stay there. The room was pleasant and clean and the staff were all friendly, polite and accommodating. The breakfast in the morning was fantastic and we both really enjoyed it. We would be happy to stay there again and can definitely recommend it!

Nice visit. Comfortable hotel with nice boutique style bar. No complaints apart from: only 1 tube of shower gel in bathroom, 3 teabags which were not replenished - very annoying and so easy to rectify ! No-one on desk to ask so had to make do. So unnecessary.

Stayed for two night in August. The room was clean and nicely decorated with tea and coffee facilities and a TV which we never turned on! Some of the furnishings needed repairing too. As it is located on the main small market place there was constant traffic noise which could have been reduced if we closed the window but it was very warm days and nights, so be aware if you are a light sleeper. Breakfast choice was limited but both the full English and the eggs Benedict were very tasty. We also had an evening meal and again our choices were delicious. Service was very good from a number of young waiting staff and everyone was very helpful and friendly. Would definitely go back.

All staff morning and evening were so accommodating. We checked in at 9pm with our dog (£15 charge) had a little bevvi in the quiet lounge. This hotel was a little stop over on route to the Lake District. The rooms were clean, we had the top floor, stairs were not an issue for us. Bed was a little soft for my liking but i have back and neck issues. In the morning we had a full vegetarian and English breakfast that set us on our way. Well presented and lots of, the twisted toasted bread idea looked fancy but kinda dried it out. I would stay again.

The location and general stay at the hotel was fantastic. If there's a negative it would be the cleaning could be improved in the room the carpets are full of dust in and around the bed and the carpet stains could be addressed. My stay was unfortunately double booked on my final night- the staff sorting this out Rachel (the general manager) and Dave were absolutely fantastic. They found me alternative accomodation and have looked after me on my remaining stay at the hotel- so thank you. I would highly recommend this beautiful building to stay in and wouldn't be too concerned by any negative reviews about tight stairs etc the building is a few hundred years old and has so much charm.
